Geelong list manager defends Cats ruck stocks

2019-10-04T11:30+10:00

Geelong list manager Stephen Wells says the Cats are comfortable with their current ruck stocks, despite not managing to sign Todd Goldstein as a free agent.

Wells confirmed they had a crack at the North Melbourne star, but will now back their current ruck group.

“I actually think that too much has been made of our ruck. Rhys Stanley had his best year with the Cats and we think that there’s strong improvement in him … so right now, we’re not talking to any other ruckmen from any other clubs,” said Wells on SEN Breakfast.

“We’re interested in watching how that market goes, but the rucks we have got helped us play some really good footy, particularly earlier in the year.

Wells said that Stanley held his own against “star ruckmen” like Max Gawn and Brodie Grundy.

“They’re outstanding players and they’re very, very hard to beat. Rhys has done a good job against those best ruckmen at times and we’re really looking forward to backing him in in 2020.”
