Australian golfer Nick O’Hern became the first player to beat Tiger Woods twice in a professional match play competition in 2007.
O’Hern knocked Woods out of the second round in the WGC Match Play Championship in 2005 and backed it up with a third-round knockout in 2007 at the same tournament.
The West Australian says being an Aussie combined with a simple theory from his caddy helped him make history.
“One of the advantages of being an Aussie, especially playing in America, is we just really don’t care over there, in Match Play especially,” O’Hern told This is Your Sporting Life, for Tobin Brothers Funerals - celebrating lives.
“I learned early on when I played him the first time, that I wasn’t going to be sucked in by this aura that he has.
“I stood on the first tee in La Costa and my caddy and I had a theory, funnily enough, about how we were going to play him.
“Our theory was that we can’t get behind this guy because if he gets the lead, he is the ultimate front runner.
“If he gets to the lead, we’re kind of done.”
The theory proved more than useful for O’Hern, who says beating Woods twice is something he’ll “always remember and cherish”.
