We have passed the halfway point of the year and trade talk and rumours are starting to bubble to the surface.
Over a hundred players remain out of contract and while a lot are either on the verge of re-signing or are in the twilight of their careers and taking it year by year, they still count as unsigned.
Taking the pool of players who are yet to re-sign and constructing it into a best 22 allows us to have a better look at the depth of players potentially available in each position.
For example, there won’t be a great deal of key forwards on the market this year based on the current out of contract players, with Daniel McStay, Ben Reid and Cam McCarthy among the top prospects.
Key defenders are a little more interesting with David Astbury, Jake Carlisle, Alex Keath and Liam Jones among those unsigned.
You also have a number of experienced rucks out of contract this year in Nic Naitanui, Matthew Kreuzer, Sam Jacobs and Stefan Martin.
Whether any of these players actually move or whether it’s only a matter of time until they re-sign, here’s what a best 22 made up of players currently out of contract looks like.
