Voss outlines future plans for emerging Power prospects

2019-04-26T11:00+10:00

Port Adelaide assistant coach Michael Voss says the club will aim to move young duo Zak Butters and Connor Rozee into new positions in the future.

The pair have been extremely impressive so far, averaging more than 16 disposals from five rounds.

Voss says although their class inside 50 is invaluable, he doesn’t want them playing across half-forward forever.

“Both him (Rozee) and Butters have added a touch of class to our forward line,” he told The Captain’s Run.

“It has enabled someone like Boaky (Travis Boak) to be able to go from half-forward and spend more time on ball.

“That half-forward role, we can’t leave them there to die as well so trying to get them and skill them up to get them some more time through the midfield will be a plan moving forward, but they’re doing a good job at the moment, that’s for sure.”

Voss also praised the work of former Gippsland Power captain Xavier Duursma, whose pre-season efforts caught the Power assistant’s eye.

“Whether it was through training and the little one-on-ones, whether it was Ollie Wines facing off against Xavier Duursma, he’d hold his own in the battle,” Voss said.

“He wouldn’t necessarily win it but he’d put his head over the footy.

“We admire those little traits. Clearly the speed they all have was going to impact us on some front but then to have the resilience as an 18-year-old to up every session… and to be able to consistently train well is pretty tough to do.”

Port Adelaide returns to the Adelaide Oval tonight to host their 16th Anzac Round clash, with North Melbourne’s Jasper Pittard and Jared Polec set to face their old teammates.
