Adelaide midfielder, former Kangaroo to retire

2018-08-07T13:50+10:00

Adelaide midfielder Sam Gibson has announced he will be retiring at the end of the season.

The 32-year-old joined the Crows during last year’s trade period after spending six seasons at North Melbourne, playing 130 consecutive matches between Round 12, 2012 and Round 23, 2017 for the Roos.

Gibson is one of just eight players to have played 100 consecutive games since making their debut.

“I’m really grateful for the opportunity to play at the highest level with both the Kangaroos and the Crows,” Gibson told Adelaide’s official club website.

“North Melbourne gave me a chance when no-one else would and I had six wonderful years at Arden Street with some friendships and memories I’ll cherish forever.

“It was a privilege to come to Adelaide late last year and be a part of this football club.

“There’s a fantastic group of players and coaches here that will no doubt have success in the near future.

“For me, I’m looking forward to the next chapter, either here in Adelaide or back in Melbourne.

“I was a graduate engineer before I was drafted and hope to get back into construction, which is something I really love.”

The midfielder was taken at pick 63 in 2012 rookie draft and went on to play 135 AFL games, booting 53 goals, and averaging 22.2 possessions per game.
