“Stay the course”: Frawley’s message to Carlton

2018-07-11T07:56+10:00

Former St Kilda captain Danny Frawley has urged Carlton to “stay the course”, saying the dangers of constant change is too big to ignore.

The Blues have won just one game this season, sitting at the bottom of the ladder.

The under fire club has been questioned all year, with many wondering if this list is strong enough to take them into the future, while the jobs of coach Brendon Bolton and list manager Stephen Silvagni have been questioned.

However, Frawley has explained how being a staple club is of upmost importance, using examples from the past to highlight why Carlton can’t be swayed by external pressure.

“Probably for the first time Carlton, right now with where they are on the ladder, they’ve got to stick fat,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“If they change the course again, they may as well just tear up the memberships.

“They got to stay the course. You’ve got to have the right people in those positions, but change can really destabilise a club.

“With different CEOs and different footy operations, because they have a different methodology and how they want to work.

“Damien Hardwick was at Hawthorn at the same time when they were in a position for success and they got the likes of James Frawley, Josh Gibson, David Hale and Shaun Burgoyne.

“Carlton, when you look at Josh Kennedy, Eddie Betts, Sam Jacobs and Jarrad Waite, they all left for differing reasons.

“The fact is over that period, there was a lot of different administration. There was no continuity at all and that’s why the strong clubs, they don’t waver. They stay the course.

“When you have a change of management, you have a change of philosophy.

“Geelong stuck fat with Bomber Thompson, they could have easily got rid of him, Hawthorn early days with Clarko (Alastair Clarkson) wasn’t working, they stuck fat and Richmond stuck fat with Damien Hardwick.”
