Stinky Saint explains nickname

2017-07-06T11:17+10:00

St Kilda forward Tim Membrey has described the story behind his comical nickname around the footy club.

Known as ‘Skunk,’ the 23-year-old says he earned that mantle back in his early days and it has stuck with him throughout his career – something assistant coach Danny Frawley also confirmed.

“I’ve had that nickname [Skunk] for a while,” Membrey told SEN Breakfast.

“Back in my junior footy days, there was a rumour going around that I may have dropped a few too many farts in the locker room. The odour was pretty bad, so that’s how the nickname came about and it is one I’m very proud of.”

St Kilda is back inside the top-eight after a three-game winning streak, and Membrey believes if the team continues this upward trend, there is no reason why they can’t make noise in September.

“I think when we were losing, we were going away from our dare with the footy and we weren’t taking the game on as much as we once were,” he said.

“At the moment we are getting that back and the coaches are always pushing for us to play our way and back in our methods of taking the game on and being bold with the footy. We are starting to get back to our game, so if we can build that over the next couple of weeks, there is no reason why we can’t go deep in September.”
