Montagna right to return

2017-03-29T18:55+11:00

Veteran St Kilda star Leigh Montagna has declared himself available for Saturday night’s clash against West Coast.

The 33-year-old, who missed the entire JLT Community Series with a persistent calf injury, made a successful return last weekend in a VFL practise match and says he’s ready to go.

“I’m fit and available after playing three quarters in the VFL on Sunday,” he told The Run Home.

“I’ll put my hand up for selection and while I don’t want to pre-empt anything given we’ve got training tomorrow, I’m fit and available so hopefully I’ll go over to Perth.”

Despite a lack of match fitness the Saints are likely to pull the trigger on the star playmaker given injuries to Nick Riewoldt (knee) and midfielder David Armitage (groin) have severely depleted their stocks.

Montagna, a veteran of 271 games, finished fourth in last year’s best and fairest while averaging 27 disposals.

His presence will help steady a side still reeling from its opening round disaster against Melbourne.

St Kilda has lost its last seven matches against West Coast and has not beaten the Eagles at Domain Stadium since Round 9, 2010.
