Dees' GM of Footy: Scorpions' history won't be forgotten in Casey rebranding

2016-12-21T15:45+11:00

Melbourne’s general manager of football Josh Mahoney is certain the history of newly rebranded VFL side Casey Demons’ time as the Springvale Scorpions will not be forgotten.

The Demons pushed ahead on Monday to rename the Casey Scorpions to the Casey Demons to better align the AFL and VFL outfits the club have.

Casey will adopt Melbourne’s traditional Guernsey design as part of the process.

Melbourne have been aligned with Casey since 2009, three years after the former Springvale Scorpions decided to move from their Newcomen Road Oval home to the Casey Fields complex in Cranbourne in 2006.

The Scorpions were the standout VFL side of the late 1990’s, winning four premierships between 1995 and 1999.

Mahoney says that despite the changes, the history of the club in Springvale will continue to be honoured and celebrated.

“Springvale Football Club has been around for a long time. They’ve got a long history,” he said on SEN Afternoons.

“We’ve got to make it a priority of ours to make sure we represent Springvale’s history, and the history they’ve had.

“We’ll be doing that on the jumper and also recognising their history in terms of their honour boards as well so, it’s a really positive move for both previously Casey Scorpions and Melbourne.”

Mahoney says that all the changes were conducted in accordance with the VFL club’s board.

“We went through the Casey Scorpions board and had discussions with them, gave them a few options,” Mahoney said.

“We were pleased that in the end they saw the same as we did - that it was beneficial to do it the way we’ve done, for the Melbourne footy club and for them.”

SEN Inside Football reporter Paul Amy says that this latest move will likely be received better than the reaction to club moving away from Springvale a decade ago.

“They’ve got a long-term deal with the City of Casey out there to provide community programs so, they saw their future as being out there, in a VFL model,” he said on SEN’s The Run Home.

“As someone who followed Springvale and Casey for a long time, I don’t think it’s the worse move that you’ve ever seen.

“Casey did do its best to pack all its history when it moved to Casey Fields in 2006.

“I think the change now from Casey Scorpions to Casey Demons, it’s probably less jolting than when Springvale Scorpions became the Casey Scorpions and pitched their tent out at Casey Fields 10 years ago.”
