Every pick from this year's NAB AFL National Draft

2016-11-25T19:10+11:00

The Bombers have taken Andrew McGrath with the first pick in the 2016 NAB AFL National Draft, while GWS have taken Tim Taranto at pick two and Hugh McCluggage has been selected by Brisbane with pick three.

All the selections will be updated below.

Round One

Pick 1: Essendon

Andrew McGRATH 2/6/98 | Ht: 177.4cm | Wt: 76.7kg | Sandringham Dragons

“I think from very early in the season we saw his ability to impact games and influence games whether it was down back or in the midfield. He just gets the job done. Playing more time in the midfield and getting more confident in that role has just opened up and highlighted his attacking out of the backline. It gave him a bit more confidence to run and carry, his linking and ability to change directions. It’s hard to know what more to say because his season has just been unbelievable. Whether he goes right at the top or whenever he goes, he is going to be a very good AFL player straight away. He has probably been defend first, attack second and that’s something we were trying to work on with him. He held the fort for Brighton Grammar and was very, very team focused, but it’s about picking your times when to attack and when to defend and at different stages you have to take the game on and run and carry for the team. His job on Ainsworth in the nationals was exactly that and he provided the run and carry while also cutting the man out. At times you have to put it on teammates to say it’s my time to run and carry for the team and I need to have the ball. Because he is very self-effacing I don’t reckon he really presented up that way prior to now. So it’s maybe a bit more maturity and assertiveness which has been great to see, his ability to navigate off-field pressures and other commitments at school or with Vic Metro has been absolutely outstanding.” – Sandringham Dragons talent manager Ryan O’Connor

Strengths: agility, speed, character, intensity Needs To Improve: contested ball

Pick 2: GWS Giants

Tim TARANTO 28/1/98 | Ht: 185.6cm | Wt: 84.1kg | Sandringham Dragons

“Like Andy McGrath and Will Setterfield, he is quite considered about his game – there is a structure. They have their rehab, their training plan and they work on all areas of their game on and off the field. They consistently perform in big moments. He is amazing over his head for his size. He knocks up getting the footy. What people don’t realise about him is his one percenters. He gets the high 20s in touches, but he would also lead our tackle count or shepherd marks, shepherd spoils. We set our groups a target of eight of those acts and he averaged 14. I don’t think he realises how good he is.” – Dragons talent manager Ryan O’Connor

Strengths: marking, scoreboard impact, size, one-percenters Needs To Improve: speed

Pick 3: Brisbane Lions

Hugh McCLUGGAGE 3/3/98 | Ht: 185.6cm | Wt: 75.9kg | North Ballarat Rebels

“He has ticked all boxes this year as a top-age player to go through and win Vic Country’s most valuable player, All-Australian, Morrish Medal and also the Rebels’ best and fairest in 12 games for us. He is right up there with the best players I have seen come through the Rebels. He can kick goals as a midfielder and has fine running capabilities. With his skill by foot and by hand he doesn’t waste a possession. As a slight midfielder he protects the ball really well, but his ability to be a chain player where he can start the chain of play and then finish with a goal is elite. At the next level he would probably start as a half forward/wing and once he develops his body a bit further he will go into a midfield role. He knows how good he can be and he’s worked very hard to get as good as he can be. He knows where he wants to get in football and in life. He’s a very unassuming character, very much a listener and a learner. Nothing fazes him. When he gets a lot of pressure on him he doesn’t change his demeanor. This year he has always had someone on him in a run-with role.” – North Ballarat Rebels talent manager Phil Partington

Strengths: all-round game, composure, goal sense, vision Needs To Improve: strength

Pick 4: Gold Coast Suns

Ben AINSWORTH 10/2/98 | Ht: 178.0cm | Wt: 76.2kg | Gippsland Power

“Ben is a super-talented and very organised kid who is driven to get the absolute best out of himself. A very good kick, a great mark for his size and has elite vertical jump and speed. Ideally his best position at the moment is forward but he could become a midfielder in time. Fantastic hands and a great finisher. I’d liken him to Jamie Elliott. He’s quicker and more agile than Jamie but plays with a similar style. If he goes outside the top five I’d be surprised.” – Gippsland Power coach Leigh Brown

Strengths: class, finishing, marking, skill Needs to Improve: endurance, ground balls

Pick 5: GWS Giants (academy selection)

Will SETTERFIELD 5/2/98 | Ht: 189.4cm | Wt: 79.7kg | Sandringham Dragons

“Has done amazingly well to navigate the year being in Caulfield Grammar’s boarding house and playing for NSW and Allies, plus for us. The sheer amount of travel on top of needing to study and not being at home with the direct support has meant he had to be a real self-starter and really motivated to get things done and be self-sufficient. To his credit I thought there were some real outstanding patches of footy. He had injury concerns with an ankle and then a shoulder late in the year. It curtailed his year. His NSW game against the NT in the carnival was his carnival peak. And then some of his form in the TAC finals as a big-bodied mid rolling forward, you can see why people are really excited about him.” – Sandringham Dragons talent manager Ryan O’Connor
