Shane Watson on ODI snub & Chris Gayle

2016-01-09T08:07:21Z

Worrying about impressing selectors to keep his international cricket career alive is now a thing of the past for Shane Watson who still remains available to be picked for Australia.

The 34-year-old has not been selected in the one-day squad for the first three games against India starting on Tuesday, which has cast doubt on whether he will wear green and gold again.

"I'm over worrying about all that stuff now. The priority for me is playing well in the games that I'm in and contribute," Watson said when pressed about the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup.

"There's plenty of cricket to come in other competitions as well so whatever happens, happens.

"Getting dropped from both formats - Test and one-day cricket - makes that worry go away.

"The most important thing is my engagement with the Thunder and there's plenty of cricket to be played in other competitions around the world so, for me, all that matters is being present in the teams now.”

The all-rounder has a credible ODI record averaging over 40 with the bat and taking 168 wickets in 190 games.

"I am available [for selection] but the worry is gone and disappeared after I got dropped from the one-day squad ... I still definitely feel I have a lot to offer when I'm at my best.

“But in the end whatever I've got to offer or not, that's definitely up to the selectors."

Watson has also recently given his opinion on West Indian big-hitter Chris Gayle who has come under immense public scrutiny for his flirtatious interview with Mel McLaughlin.

“In the end there are people who will be making decisions either way (about Gayle’s return). It’s not just what you bring on the field, it’s what you bring off the field as well, which is as important,” explained Watson.

“I have played against Chris for a long time, since I started really, and that behaviour is fairly expected.

“People who know Chris Gayle will know those are the sort of things he can do at times, and at an inappropriate time, obviously it gets him into a fair bit of trouble.’’
